Vulcan Stephen and other fantasy roles?
Random thought...wouldn't it be cool if Stephen Colbert had a role in the next "Star Trek" movie as a Vulcan? He can do that eyebrow thing that Spock does AND he does know J.J. Abrams. Just a fantasy to ponder while the show is on hiatus. Any other suggestions what project Stephen should do outside the "Report?" Current Mood: cold |

Stephen Colbert: Glenn Beck Raised The Stupid Bar to Impossible. Colbert Dishes On Bush, Glenn Beck, and MSNBCWhen Chicago's Second City comedy troupe held a weekend-long 50th anniversary bash, the obvious highlights were Friday and Saturday shows with Martin Short, Steve Carell, Bonnie Hunt, Jim Belushi, George Wendt, Eugene Levy, Andrea Martin, Catherine O'Hara, Harold Ramis, Shelly Berman, Rachel Dratch, Robert Klein, Jack McBrayer and tons more. There were also panel discussions, including one in which alumnus Stephen Colbert and writers on his "The Colbert Report" held forth. Along the way, they revealed what didn't get said at a controversial Washington engagement, underscored the impossibility of parodying Glenn Beck and wondered just a bit about the comedic forays of serious-minded news hosts like Keith Olbermann and Rachel Maddow. With a tape of the hour-long session from Second City, I just watched as Colbert explained the creation of the "well-intentioned idiot" he portrays. ("The character really means well. He's willfully ignorant of what you know and care about. He's not mendacious and stupid. He's innocent and stupid, like a puppy who's urinating on your politics, not destroying your politics.") But a question-and-answer period inspired the best exchanges, starting with one on Colbert's appearance at the 2006 White House Correspondents' Association Dinner. In character, Colbert created apparent dyspepsia among some portion of his Washington A-list political and media audience. The dinner draws more than 2,500 and is a very curious function, underscoring the depressingly incestuous relations between the political establishment and a few too many journalists, some of whom so deeply crave the acceptance of whoever's in power. It's morphed from a rather staid gathering into a smoochy celebrity gang bang and sucking up to politicians, with media organizations inviting both people they cover and famous actors and other pop culture stars as guests, and doing so with competitive fervor in their search to look hip. Affecting the empathic 'temperature'
I always used to think I liked giving gifts because it's fun to make other people happy. But I just noticed how good it felt to give little holiday presents to my office-mates, and realized that I was getting a happy-buzz off of the surprise!intrigued!happy that each person gave off when I gave them their little package. I wasn't giving the gifts just so that I could get buzzed, but it's an interesting thing. When I think about it, there's probably no social interaction with anyone that doesn't have some small shading of empathic resonance. How much of my behavior is unconsciously geared to affect those shadings? Do I smile at strangers for their benefit, or for mine, or for the general principle of increased-happiness-is-good? And even if it's selfish to be friendly... is that actually bad? (I vote no.) On the flip side, I know that I compromise or give in sometimes in situations involving negativity, just to sidestep being surrounded by that cloud of uncomfortable emotion. I guess it would be like unconsciously/habitually turning up the thermostat if I felt chilly. Sometimes it's an acceptable adaptive choice, but it would probably be better for me to be aware of it so that I can consciously decide whether it's something I want to do or not. I guess in this analogy, grounding and centering and standing my ground would be equivalent to putting on a sweater, changing my own state instead of changing the environment. Still, it's hard to be 100% aware of the empathic state of every situation (just like most of the time I don't think about the physical temperature of my environment). Even with increased mindfulness in extreme situations, I'm likely to continue unconsciously taking action to spin the everyday empathic environment around me to "comfortable". I don't know that that's necessarily a bad thing. Just thinking it over and curious how other people think about it. :) |
